Isabella plantation Richmond park So near to London, so far from London. If you find yourself in the Richmond, Kingston area in the early to late spring a visit to the Isabella plantation is well worth the time. Set in a woodland the plantation if packed full of azaleas and rhododendrons providing spectacular displays from early spring to early summer. The show starts with carpets of bulbs in various forms including that woodland favourite the bluebell flowering in vast carpets in the dappled sun light of early spring. The main event starts with the explosion of colour created by the azaleas, reds, whites and yellows combining to create a landscape of interest and intrigue intrigue. The effect is also enhanced by the small streams that run freely through the plantation creating corridors of colour and adding another dimension in the form of sound. Early summer is the signal for the final act as the azaleas come to a close the rhododendron explode in colour to continue the display. Exploring the plantation with its narrow paths and streams you could be forgiven for forgetting that only short distance from the daily grind city life. The combined effect of the vibrant colours and soothing sounds of the stream have an almost magical effect. Open daily all year. 7.30 to dusk.
