6 Benefits of Using a Weed Wacker

In CategoryTim Whitcombe
ByGardenAdvice Tim Whitcombe

If you are the type of person that has a garden, then you know how important it is to maintain it properly. Gardens need nurturing to bloom. This means that you have to water your plants and maintain the soil. Lots of gardeners use fertilizers to speed the blooming process. You probably know all of this.

However, sometimes, weeds can start to grow and eclipse the mesmerizing look of your garden. This is how nature works. Weeds don’t have an appealing look. They are mostly wild plants that start to grow wherever they want. They can really overshadow the beautiful plants you have already. If you neglect them, then they will spread and grow even further.

There’s a solution to this problem. All you have to do is remove them from the root. However, this doesn’t mean that they won’t return once more. But, it will have to pass some time before they fully develop once again.

Instead of removing them by hand, you should use a weed wacker, also known as a string trimmer. Click on the link for more details https://bestofmachinery.com/what-is-a-string-trimmer-for/. They are efficient. Here are some of the things you might not know about them:

Lots of people think that a land mower can remove the weeds thoroughly.  You see, a land mower can prove useful for trimming the grass, but it won’t do the job perfectly on those weeds. This is because it is not meant to remove wild grass.

Therefore, it would be a good idea to purchase a string trimmer instead. The device is designed to pull out those weeds from their roots. It is far more convenient to use than a land mower. Anytime you have a problem with wild grass, just turn on the device and watch the weeds disappear from the ground.

If you haven’t used a string trimmer before, you should know that they are incredibly lightweight. You can maneuver it with ease. Some of them are so light that even young adults or old people can use them. This is another reason why people love the product.

You should know that there are a lot of designs out there. Each model offers a set of specifications. You should pick one that best suits you. It would help if you browsed through the products first. Find a reliable site that sells them and choose the one that suits your budget and needs. Read more here

These types of devices are not expensive. If you are continually having trouble with wild grass and weeds, then they are the perfect solution for the issue. You no longer have to pull the weeds out yourself. This can negatively affect your back.

Of course, the prices depend on the type of string trimmer you get. Not all of them are the same. But, rest assured, you won’t have to spend a lot of money on them because they are quite affordable. You can find a lot of information about them if you search the Internet. The more you know, the better.

Time-saving process

Imagine how much time you’ll save if you use a weed wacker to remove the wild grass. If you do this with your own two hands, then you will probably waste a lot of time. Not to mention that you can quickly get tired from the process.

Instead of tiring yourself constantly, use the device. If you are spending a lot of time in the garden, then you need something practical and efficient to remove all the weeds from your beautiful plants.  With the device, you can remove those weeds a lot faster than you did before. Check out the Weed Wacker Guy, among others, for more helpful information.

You can use the device for a long time because it is durable. Not only that, but you won’t have to repair it as often. The device is made from smaller parts that can easily be changed if some issues arise along the way. But that’s rarely the case with the string trimmer.

Its durability is another reason why people purchase the product. It would help you ask for recommendations from people that already use it. Or you can read online reviews to help you make the right decision about purchasing the product. Whichever one you choose, you won’t regret it.

Easy to use

Once you buy the product, it will surely come with instructions. However, there’s not much to it to understand. The string trimmer is really easy to use. All you have to do is turn it on and point it towards the weeds. The device will make sure that your flowers are weed-free.

You can use the device as often as you want. Some weeds are more persistent than others. Either way, it will do its job efficiently.

5 Common Garden Plants That Are Toxic to Dogs

In CategoryTim Whitcombe
ByGardenAdvice Tim Whitcombe

” Yew and lupins both common garden plants toxic to humans and dogs “

There are many garden plants that are poisonous if eaten by dogs. While the effects of these plants vary depending on the dog’s breed, size, and amount eaten, some plants can be deadly in small quantities.

Some breeds are more likely to eat plants than others. Labradors are notorious for eating almost anything, but other breeds, such as retrievers and spaniels, can also have this trait. All dogs rely on their taste and smell to explore their environment, however, so any canine has the potential to eat a poisonous plant.

To help keep your dog safe, here are five common UK plants that are dangerous for dogs. If you have a dog, it’s best to avoid growing these plants in your garden.

Note: If you suspect your dog has eaten a potentially dangerous plant, you should contact a vet immediately. Symptoms can develop rapidly after eating a toxic plant.

1. Rhododendron

All species of rhododendron are toxic to dogs. This is because the plant contains a toxin that disrupts natural processes in the muscles and skeleton.

If eaten by a dog, this group of plants can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, pain, and increased heart rate. In severe cases, ingesting rhododendron can lead to blindness, seizures, and coma.

It’s worth noting that all parts of the rhododendron are toxic if ingested. It’s best to avoid these plants in your garden if you have a canine companion.

2. Wisteria

Wisteria contains lectin and wisterin glycoside, which are both toxic to dogs. Eating it can cause a dog to vomit, have diarrhoea, and become depressed.

While these symptoms can be mild, eating enough wisteria can cause bloody stool and dehydration. If your dog eats enough, wisteria can lead to collapse or even death.

Wisteria seed pods are even more toxic than the plant. They may cause severe symptoms if eaten.

3. Ragwort

Ragwort isn’t just a nuisance weed – it’s also highly toxic if ingested by dogs. In fact, even a relatively small amount can be fatal. Symptoms include staggering, liver failure, neurological problems and even death.

Fortunately, ragwort is usually easy to keep under control. The exception is if your garden is near grazing fields or uncultivated land, in which case you may need to work a bit harder to ensure your dog doesn’t have access to it.

4. Yew

Yew is a common evergreen conifer that’s toxic to all animals, including both humans and dogs.

Ingesting yew foliage can cause a variety of symptoms in dogs, such as drooling, vomiting and a dry mouth. It can also lead to dizziness and stomach cramping. In the worst cases, eating yew can cause seizures, coma, and even death.

The berries are also poisonous, although not as dangerous as the foliage.

5. Daffodil and Tulip Bulbs

Daffodils and tulips are common spring flowers, but the bulbs can be dangerous if your dog digs them up. This is partly because bulbs contain a type of crystal that can cause vomiting, pain, and diarrhoea. Severe cases can also cause cardiac problems and issues with breathing.

To keep your pet safe, supervise them in the garden to ensure they don’t dig up flowerbeds. Keep bulbs that are waiting to be planted out of reach.

Other Tips for Keeping a Dog Safe in the Garden

Make sure you thoroughly audit your garden for potential dangers, such as toxic plants and water features (not all dogs are strong swimmers). This is especially important if you’ve installed a dog door to allow unrestricted access to the garden, as you likely won’t be able to supervise him at all times.

Fruit trees can be a hazard for dogs. Many pits, such as those found in peaches and plums, contain cyanide and can obstruct the digestive system if eaten. Apple seeds can also be toxic.

Some dogs can be persistent if they want to escape a garden. Make sure that all fences or boundary hedges are properly maintained. Some breeds can jump surprisingly high, which is something to keep in mind! It’s usually best to install solid fences, so your dog can’t react to other people or animals in adjacent gardens.

Additionally, be careful when applying pesticides or weed killers. Many of these are poisonous to both cats and dogs.

The five plants above are just a few that are potentially dangerous to dogs. There are many more, including snowdrops, hemlock, lily of the valley, and bracken.

The best way to keep your dog safe from poisonous plants is to take preventative action. Try to remove dangerous plants, or at least restrict access to them. It’s also important to avoid leaving clippings or fallen berries on the ground.

If your dog may have eaten a poisonous plant, or you’re noticing symptoms such as vomiting or changes in behaviour, contact your vet immediately.

Best Garden Tiller & Rototiller Reviews: Shopping for a Garden Tiller

In CategoryTim Whitcombe
ByGardenAdvice Tim Whitcombe

When the rainy season is approaching, a lot of people usually start preparing for the farming season. This means preparing the soil and getting it ready for planting. In the past this was often done by hand using tools like hoes and plows.

But, as things kept changing, these tools also continue to improve. For instance, there was the introduction of hand driven tools and now we have motor powered machines that can help you work on a relatively large piece of land in a short period of time.

Now we have garden tillers, and even though they are not necessarily a requirement for a productive garden, they still make your work easier. This makes them one of the important gardening tools.

If you are looking to purchase one, there are some things you should look at before placing your order. Below are a few of them. You can also find out more by going deep about both garden tillers and rototillers in review

  • The Size of Your Garden

If you want to buy something that will satisfy your needs, you should also consider where or what you’re going to use it on.

In this case, the size of your garden should be an important factor to look at as it can also influence your decision to purchase the tiller or not. It will help you to know exactly the type of machine you need.

If you are having a small garden, something about 1500 square feet, you should consider getting a mini-tiller, also called a cultivator. But, if you have a medium sized garden, a mid-size tiller would make the perfect solution.

However, if you’re working on a piece of land measuring 5000 square feet and above, you will definitely need a heavy-duty machine. This calls for a tiller with a bigger horsepower.

  • Usage

Another point to consider is the purpose for which you intend to use the machine. This will also guide you to know what type of machine you need. If you are going to face some heavy clay soil, you will need a machine to be able to break it up.

Duty garden tillers usually come fitted with some additional attachments like wood chippers.  This will make a perfect solution if you are having a large garden or a lot of projects to work on.

But, if you are looking to do some light maintenance on your garden, you can go for the medium size or small garden tillers. Some of them come with extra attachments as well.

For instance, you will find others having cultivators that can help to weed out unwanted plants from your garden.  See his link for some maintenance tips after the farming season https://home.howstuffworks.com/lawn-garden/professional-landscaping/lawn-tiller3.htm

  • Power Source

If you’re looking to purchase or rent a garden tiller, you should consider looking at the power source it is going to use.

Different tillers often use different fuel types. This is also affected by the size of the tiller and the manufacturer. For example, if you are having a two-cycle engine, you will need to use a mixture of gasoline and oil.

Most people however, find this to be a bit uncomfortable and therefore, look for other alternatives. These include going for the 4 cycle engines that use unleaded gas. Other alternatives are also available, like the electric mini dealers.

Even though they might not be as powerful as the gasoline-powered counterparts, they are quite easy to use and don’t produce much noise when in use.

  • Weight and Control

Of course, when buying machines, you should always go for something that is much easier to use. Practically, working with a heavy machine will not always feel comfortable.

Most large, heavy-duty tillers Are usually a little bit tough to control. A small person, whether man or woman will definitely have difficulties trying to control a machine weighing more than 200 pounds.

But, on the other hand they can help you deal with turf surfaces like hard clay soil. Small tillers can be used easily as they are much easier to control and are lightweight as well.

  • The design

Before placing an order, you need to do a little bit of research.  You will find out that these garden tillers always come in different types. You will come across names like rear-tine, counter-rotating tine and front-tine tillers. To know more click here.

All of them always have their own advantages and disadvantages. For instance, people tend to have problems with front-tine tillers because the wheels at the back will keep on running over your freshly tilled soil.

This makes the soil compact down again. This is why it is important to always check the design of the machine before buying or renting it.

  • Budget

You also need to put your budget in consideration. You probably don’t want a situation whereby you already identified the item you want only to find out you cannot have it because it is out of your budget range.

Also, it wouldn’t make any sense to buy a bigger, heavy duty machine, which is going to cost you a lot when you only want to do some light gardening. The amount you should spend also depends on the state or condition of the machine.

For instance, a brand-new machine will obviously cost more than what you would pay for a used one. When renting or buying, do a thorough inspection and find out if there are any defects as this can help you lower the budget you need for the machine.

Shopping is always considered to be a fun activity but, sometimes it gets a little bit difficult especially when you have to find something you’re going to use for the first time.

As mentioned before, garden tillers are always available in various different types and come in different sizes as well. With the few tips mentioned above, you can narrow down your search and try to find a good item that will satisfy your needs.

Also, have in mind that you can easily get swindled of your hard-earned money if you have no idea which tiller you’re looking for and is right for you. For this reason, make sure to do some small research before you proceed to make an order.

Helping storm damaged plants and tree  after a storm

To help plants recover they can be pushed or lifted back to into position and staked using a stakes or a guide wire system as in the pictures below.

The key with staking and the use of guide wiring is to hold the roots and base of the plant steady without and movement which allowing the top of the shrub or tree to move in the wind over a period of a year to help activate new root growth to stabilise the plant.

Trees and shrubs that are staked too firmly in the head of the plant do not make much root growth as they do not feel the need.

In addition it’s a good idea to take the opportunity to remove and damaged branches or stems plus reducing some of the top growth will help to rebalance the plants and in general help the plant to recover faster.

Once we get into the growing season its worth watering and liquid feeding your plant as required again to speed recovery.

Snow drops in the green – best way to plant or move them

In CategoryTim Whitcombe
ByGardenAdvice Tim Whitcombe

Snowdrops can be planted in the autumn as bulbs , but often with little success. The best way to establish snowdrops is to plant them ‘in the green’ – this means immediately after they have flowered, with their foliage still intact by digging them up and splitting the clumps.

For best results, dive and replant your snowdrops on the same day, to prevent the plants from drying out. Plant your snowdrops deeply in moist soil and water thoroughly over the next few weeks, to ensure the roots quickly re-establish.

After planting a topdressing of a handful of Growmore fertiliser per square metre will help insure that you have a good show of early spring flowers from the snow drops next year.

Remember that spring bulbs need to die back before they are cut back because the the energy from the leaves goes back into the bulb and creates next years flowers so cutting back early or not allowing bulb to die back naturally will result in non flowering or blind plants

The Advantages Of Organic Soil

In CategoryTim Whitcombe
ByGardenAdvice Tim Whitcombe

As animals and plants decompose, they add much-needed nutrients to the soil. Soil that has been amended through the decomposition of natural materials like these is referred to as organic soil. Sadly, agricultural practices throughout the world have depleted the majority of soil of most of its nutrients. Before farmers can label their produce as certified organic, they must have soil that meets the requirements put forth by the USDA. Any soil that has been depleted through modern agricultural practices must be amended with organic materials to restore it to a more nutrient-dense state.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Organic Soil?

Compared to soil that has been depleted by agricultural activities, organic soil is much more capable of cultivating plants. The organic components in the soil lead to better drainage, helping to keep the ground from becoming too densely packed. This makes planting a lot easier. Soil that has been amended with organic compounds contains far more nutrients than depleted soil. It also is better able to resist pathogens that can damage plants. A mycelial layer forms on soil that is healthy. This layer naturally detoxifies the soil, removing chemicals and pesticides.

Studies have found that soil that is rich in decaying organic compounds does a better job of resisting unwanted pests. Organic farmers don’t need to rely on pesticides like traditional farmers since the soil itself helps naturally protect their crops. Plants that are grown in rich organic soil have more minerals, antioxidants, and nutrients, making them healthier to consume. Compared to traditional agricultural practices, organic farmers typically use about half as much energy to grow and harvest their crops.

In essence, organic soil not only benefits consumers but also provides a number of environmental advantages.

Water Quality Is Not Regulated For Organic Farming

Currently, the USDA doesn’t have any regulations in place regarding the water that organic farmers use on their crops. Sadly, some organic farmers use water supplied by the city. Water like this can contaminate the soil. These contaminants can then find their way into the plants themselves, making them less healthy to consume.

Although it takes a little bit of work, you can find out whether or not the plants you are eating were grown using a municipal water supply. The first step in the process is to figure out which farm they were grown on. Then, contact the farm directly to find out whether they use purified water or well water for their crops. Make sure the water has been thoroughly tested to ensure that it doesn’t contain contaminants. Most organic farmers will be happy to answer any questions you have since they understand how important it is to consume healthy foods.

Don’t hesitate to learn as much as you can about the fruits and vegetables that you purchase to ensure that they are healthy to consume. A nifty trick we’d advise is Invest in a grow tent and purchase LED grow lights online. They tend to pay dividends if you really want to be serious.

Hopefully this will help you on your journey to a better vegetable and fruit growing experience.
