Florence Fennal

Florence fennel produces white, slightly flattened bulbs with an aniseed flavour, which are delicious either steamed, grilled or roasted or grated raw in salads. The foliage can be used as the herb fennel..
Vegetables key

Sow seeds thinly 13mm (0.5in) deep from May to July in rows 38-45cm (15-18in) apart. Very early sowings may run to seed if the weather is too cold.

When large enough to handle, thin seedlings to 20-23cm (8-9in) apart.

Keep soil moist.

As the bulbs start to develop, mound up the soil around them and continue earthing up until the bulb is mature (about 7-10cm/3-4in across) from mid-summer to mid-autumn.

Lift bulbs as required once mature.

The foliage can be used as a herb garnish.
